Jamnagar district is a district of Gujarat state with its administrative headquarters located at Jamnagar city. The district got its name from its headquarters city. According to the Pauranik literature Lord Krishna established his kingdom at Dwarka town in the district. Earlier the place is well known as Nawanagar. Jam Sri Rawalji founded the Nawanagar in 1540 AD and he made Nawanagar, the capital of the Princely State. According to historical records, Bahadurshah, the emperor of Gujarat gave Jam Lakhaji twelve villages as a gift in recognition of his role as a siege of Pawagadh. But after some time Jam Lakhaji was killed by his cousins named Tamachi Deda. Then Jam Hamirji Jadeja took possession of these villages. After that Jam Rawal killed his father's murders and occupied the Kutch. As a result the two sons of Hamirji, Khengarji and Sahibji fled to Delhi where during a lion hunt, the two brothers saved the Emperor Humayun from being killed by a lion. The two brothers then rewarded an army to regain their kingdom for their valor. Finally, a huge battle was fought between the two brothers and Jam Sri Rawalji. There is an interesting story associated with the fact that why he made his capital. One day when he was on a hunting trip, he saw a hare that turned on the hunting dogs down and forced them to flight. After this incident he was so impressed that he thought that a land which could breed such hares would definitely have such brave locals which would be superior to other men. With the passage of time the name of the capital i.e. Nawanagar was changed to Jamnagar. The current name Jamnagar means the town of the Jams.

Ajaysinhji Daulatsinhji Jadeja, a distinguished Indian cricket player who played in 15 Test matches and 196 One Day Internationals was born on 1st February, 1971 at Jamnagar city. He was a regular player in the Indian cricket team between 1992 and 2000.

Geographically, the district lies at 22°47'N latitude, 70°07'E longitude and 17 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 3.36% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 14,184 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 2nd in the state and 23rd in India. It is bounded by Arabian Sea on the north and west, Porbandar district on the south and Rajkot district on the east. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season and it remains in the southward-westward. The actual rainfall in the district was 934.4 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 7 talukas namely Jam Jodhpur, Jodiya, Dhrol, Jamnagar, Lalpur, Kalavad and Jam Khambhalia. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 7 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 16 towns and 714 villages. The administrative language in the district is Gujarati.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 21,60,119 out of which 11,14,192 are males and 10,45,927 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 939 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 13.44% including 13.54% were males and 13.32% were females. The population density in the district is 152 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 22,207 out of which 11,499 were males and 10,707 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 13,985 out of which 8,103 were males and 5,881 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 84.33% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Gujarati with 89.78%.

It was known as Brass city before discovering its oil wells. But at present it is popularly called World’s Oil City since it has both the world’s biggest as well as smallest oil refinery. The biggest oil refinery located in the district belongs to Reliance industries. Industrially the district is quite well developed. The prominent industrial units in the district are Reliance Industries, Essar Oil, Gujarat State Fertilizer Corporation, Chemical Fertilizer Complex and Tata Chemicals. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. Bandhni clothes manufactured in the district are world famous. In terms of mineral resources the district is rich in Bauxite. The contribution of the agricultural sector in its economy is also remarkable. Some of its chief agricultural products are jowar, peanuts, groundnuts, sesame, oil seeds, etc. The adoption of the new agricultural technologies amongst the farmers of the district helps to increase the production of various agricultural items.

The district is an abode of numerous reputed educational institutions. M.P. Shah Medical College one of the best medical colleges in India is situated in the district. It has an ayurveda university named Gujarat Ayurveda University, considered as one of the best ayurveda university in the world. Some other recognised educational institutions in the district are A.V.D.S. Arts and Commerce College, Government Dental College, JJ Karia College of Computer Science, M.P. Shah Medical College, Mahila Arts and Home Science College, National Computer College, Gosrani Commerce and BBA College, D.K.V. Arts and Science College, H.J. Doshi Informaton Technology, K.P. Shah Law College, etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 73.65% including 81.5% are males and 65.33% are females.

Ahir Vikrambhai Arjanbhai Madam, an eminent Indian politician and a member of the 14th Lok Sabha from the Jamnagar constituency was born on 23rd March, 1958 at Jamnagar city. He is a member of the Indian National Congress. Poonamben Madam is Member of Parliament from Jamnagar seat. She was a member of Gujarat Legislative Assembly from Khambhalia in Jamnagar district.

The district has numerous places of interest which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Darbargadh palace is a palace of Maharajah, an antique royal residence of Jam Saheb. It is one of the most wonderful historical complexes in Jamnagar which depicts the blend of Rajput and European styles of architecture. Lakhota Fort, a small but unique palace is located on an island in the middle of Lakhota Lake. Once upon a time this place belonged to the Maharaja of Nawanagar. Willingdon Crescent, a marvellous creation by Ranjit Singh in this area. Moreover, he constructed it with the help of his experiences from his Europe journey. Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, located at a distance of 30 km. from this place is the largest bird sanctuary in Gujarat state. Some other notable centres of attraction in the district are Balachadi Beach, Pratap Vilas Palace, Kotha Bastion, Bhujio Kotho, Bohra Hajira and many more.
