About Anuppur District (Madhya Pradesh)
Anuppur district, a part of Shahdol division is a district of Madhya Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Anuppur town. It is a tribal dominated district which forms a part of the central India. Most of the areas in the district are hilly and forested. On 15th August, 2003 the Anuppur district was carved out from the Shahdol district and emerged as a separate district in the map of Madhya Pradesh state.
Omkar Singh, an illustrious Indian sports shooter who won three gold medals and a silver medal in shooting events at the 2010 Commonwealth Games held in Delhi was born on 8th August, 1984 at Kotma Colliery in the Anuppur district.
Geographically, the district lies at 23°11'N latitude, 81°70'E longitude and 505 m Altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 22.88% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 3,747 sq km. and in terms of geographical area it occupies the ranks of 44th in the state and 321st in India. It is bounded by Shahdol district on the North and North West, Bilaspur district of Chhattisgarh on the South East, Dindori district on the South West, Koriya district of Chattisgarh on the East and Umaria district on the West. The principal rivers, flows through the Anuppur district are Son River, Johila River, Tipan River, Narrmada River, Kewai River and Chandas River. The Maikal Hills, starting from southern to eastern part of the district are stands like a natural boundary to it. The climate of the district is characterised as temperate climate. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 1367.5 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administration wise, the district is divided into 4 tehsils namely Anuppur, Jaithari, Kotma and Pushprajgarh. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 3 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 4 sub-districts, 13 towns and 571 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
According to 2011 census the district has a population of 7,49,237 out of which 3,79,114 are males and 3,70,123 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 976 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 12.30% out of which 11.44% were males and 13.20% were females. The population density in the district is 200 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 11,399 out of which 5,732 were males and 5,667 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 5,068 out of which 3,028 were males and 2,040 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 91.63% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 96.83%.
Anuppur district is blessed with a great variety of mineral resources. The commonly found mineral resources in the district are bauxite, coal and fire clay. Most of the coalmines in the district are located in Kotma, one of its sub divisions. Amarkantak region of the district is famous for its deposits of bauxite. In the name of industries, it has some small-scale industries of polythene, basket industry, paper mill, soda factory, bidi factory, etc. Every year a good amount of revenue comes from these industries helps in its economy to a great extent. Some of its population are also engaged in agriculture in order to earn their livelihood. The chief agricultural products in the district are paddy, wheat, maize, gram, etc. Sometime its economy is based on forestry as well. Sal Amla, Teak, Sarai and Shisham are the available forest resources in the district.In the year 2019-20 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 9,19,941 lakhs at current price and Rs. 5,90,606 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 8,34,936 lakh at current price and Rs. 5,20,024 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2019-20 was Rs. 97,631 at current price and Rs. 60,807 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
The district is an abode of several reputed educational institutions. It provides a platform for higher education. Some of its recognised government educational institutions are Indira Gandhi National Tribal University, Govt. Tulsi Degree College, Government M.M College (Kotma), Government Degree College (Pushprajgarh), Govt. Degree College (Jaihari), Govt. Polytechnic College etc. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 67.88% including 78.26% are males and 57.3% are females.
The district has a great variety of centres of attraction which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. Narmada Mandir, located in the district is a group of temples. Pilgrims from far off places comes to these temples to offer their prayers. Mai Ka Bagiya, a beautiful garden in the district is situated at its densely forested area. Moreover, it is located at a distance of 1km from the main temple. Sonmuda popularly known as the Sunrise point is the place from where the Sone River originates. Kabir Chabutra, a holy place in the district is named after the great Sant Kabir since he had spent most of his time in meditation in the place. The place from where the Johilla River originates is known as Jwaleshwar Mahadev, a pious place. Kapildhara is a well known place of the district where the Kapil rishi meditated throughout his life. The two tremendously wonderful waterfalls in the district are Shambhudhara and Durgadhara, located in its deep dense forest. Visitors come to this place to enjoy its mesmerising natural sceneries.
