About Sikar District (Rajasthan)
Historically, Sikar was the kingdom of royal Shekhawati region. It was the capital of the Tikana Sikar. It is surrounded by high walls with seven gates-Bawari gate, Fatehpuri gate, Nani gate, Surajpole gate Dujod gatye old, Dujod gate new and Chandpole gate. Sikar is a city located midway between Agra and Bikaner in the Shekhawati region of Rajasthan state in India. Its old name was ‘Veer Bhan Ka Bas’. Raja Ram Kalyan Singh was the last ruler of Sikar. He built clock tower.
Geographically, the district lies at 27°61'N latitude, 75°14'E longitude and 427 m altitude. The district covers a geographical area of 7,732 sq km. and on basis of this size ranks 17th in the State and 115th in India. As per data recorded in the year 2021, there was a total 2.61% of the total geographical area of the district. It is located in the North-Eastern part of Rajasthan. It is bounded by Jhunjhunu district on the North West, Nagaur district on the South west, Jaipur on the South East, and Mahendragarh (Haryana) on the North East corner. It has semi-arid climate, hot in summer, scanty rainfall, and chilly winter season. It has general dryness in the air except in the brief monsoon season. Major National highway NH11 passes through the district. The actual rainfall in the district was 746.2 mm in the year of 2021-22.
Administratively, the district is divided into 6 sub-districts, 15 towns and 1,167 villages. The district of Sikar came into existence in the state of Rajasthan with an allotted district code of 111. Its district Headquarters is located at Sikar which is situated at a distance of 116 km. from the State Capital. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.
Demographically, according to 2011 census, the district is home to a total number of 4,45,713 households with a total population of 26,77,333 including 13,74,990 are males and 13,02,343 are females which led it to the ranks of 6th in the state and 151st in India. The population growth rate during the period 2001-2011 was 17.03% including 17.24% were males and 16.80% are females. The density of population of the district is 346 persons per sq km. The sex ratio is pegged at 947 (females per 1000 males) while the child ratio stands at 848 (females per 1000 males). As per 2011 census the percentage of major religions practiced by the people of this district are Hindu and Muslim with 87.48% and 12.24% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 97.96%. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 71,528 out of which 37,509 were males and 34,017 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 17,619 out of which 10,029 were males and 7,589 were females.
Economically, the main source of income for the people of this region comes from agriculture either through cultivation of their own pieces of land or from working as labourers on a daily wage rate or contractual rate on the land of their neighbors or counterparts. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 32,90,570 lakhs at current price and Rs. 20,51,845 lakhs at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The net domestic product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 30,21,342 lakh at current price and Rs. 18,49,685 lakh at constant prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 98,092 at current price and Rs. 60,052 at constant prices in the year 2011-2012.
Educationally, according to 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 71.91% including 85.11% are males and 58.23% are females. The total literate population of the district is 16,52,117 including 9,95,275 are males and 6,56,842 are females. Pandit Deendayal Upadhaya Shekhwati University, known as Shekhawati University was established in the year 2012 by Rajasthan legislative Assembly by passing ‘The Shekhawati University, Sikar Bill 2012’. Another university is Mody University which is Private Women’s University. It was established in 1998 by Mr. R. P. Mody, an Industrialist and Philanthropist. This University offers undergraduate programmes for instance Bachelor of Technology, Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Science. Sobhasaria Engineering College and Government Polytechnic College are other important educational institutes. Sikar is the smallest city with IIT JEE advance centre. Youth Men provide a major role in Indian defense service in the comparison of the other district of Rajasthan.
Mr. Bhairon Singh Shekhawat was 11th Vice President of India and the most famous political personality from this region. He was born on 23rd October, 1923. He was the member of Bhartiya Janta Party and leading member of National Democratic Alliance. He also served Chief Miniter of Rajasthan three times from 1977 to 1980, 1990 to 1992 and from 1993 to 1998. Another key person of politics is Mr. Mahendeo Singh Khandela. He was born on September 23rd, 1943. He belongs to Indian National Congress. He was elected for 15th Lok Sabha. In 2011, he became Union Minister of State Tribal Affairs. He also served as Minister of Road Transport and Highways in 2009. He had been the member of Rajasthan Legislative Assembly from 1980 to 2008.
The district has several historical sites and religious places, such as Khatu Shyamji, Laxmangarh, Ganeshwar, Jeenmata, Madh Niwas Kothi, and Harsh Nath Temple. It is very fascination and charming place for tourist. The fresco paintings on the ancient havellies, temples and forts attract tourist from worldwide. Shri Mansa Devi Mandir is a Hindu temple to Goddess Mansa Devi, a form of Shakti. It is a prominent mandir of the region situated on Hasampur hills.
There are a number of persons from the region who are famous in various field. Bajrang Lal Takhar, born on January 5th, 1981, is a Indian rower and Naib Subedar in Rajputana Rifles regiment of the Indian Army. He won silver medal for India at the 2006 Asian games, two gold medals in singles and doubles scull races in South Asian games 2006 and a gold medal for India in Asian games in 2010. He was also awarded by Arjun Award in 2008 and Padam Shri in 2013. He was awarded by Mahavir Chakra on August 15th, 1999 for bravery in Kargil war and Sena award in 1993 for anti terrorist operation in Kupwara area of Jammu and Kashmir. Digendra Kumar, born on July 3rd, 1969, was former member of 2nd Battalion of Rajputana Rifles regiment of the Indian Army. Swami Keshwanand (1883-1972) was a freedom fighter, educator and social reformer from this region. His actual name was Birama. Lothoo Nitharwal (1804-1855) was a revolutionary freedom fighter of Rajasthan. Ustad Fiyaz Khan, born on 1934, was an international reputed table player from Delhi Gharana. During 2021, 42 foreign tourists and 1,66,560 domestic tourists visited the historical and religious places of the district.
