Gautam Buddha Nagar district, a part of Meerut division is a district of Uttar Pradesh state with its administrative headquarters located at Noida city. The district got its name from Lord Gautam Budhha. It is largely a suburban district of Uttar Pradesh. Moreover, it is a part of the National Capital Region. As per 2011 census, 51.52% growth in the preceding decade helps the district to establish itself as one of the fastest growing parts of India. The district was emerged on 6thSeptember, 1997 after it carved out from the Ghaziabad and Bulandshahar district with effect from Govt. order no 1249/97/82/97. Gautam Buddha Nagar comprises Dadri and Bisrakh blocks carved out of Gaziabad on the other hand Dankaur and Jewar blocks carved out of Bulandshahar district. Furthermore, the 18 other villages from Bulandshahar was carved out in order to included in Dankaur and Jewar. There is no doubt that the area occupied by the present Gautam Buddha Nagar district is associated with a very glorious past, which can be traced back to the Tretayug i.e. in the era of Ramayan as Bisrakh, the birthplace of Rawan’s father, Viseswa Rishi is the part of in this region. In the same way, in Dwapar Yug i.e. in the era of Mahabharat because Dankore, the ashram of Dronacharya where Kaurav n Pandav took their basic training. One more thing is worth mentioning about the district is that the natives of this land were actively associated with the Freedom Struggle Movements namely Shri Gopi Chand, Shri Ram Nath, Shri Harsharan Singh etc. Even during the freedom struggle Bhagat Singh, Sukh Dev n Rajguru used the village, Nalgara located on Noida-Greater Noida Express way to hide after they planned bomb attack on assembly from Nalgara.

Arjun Vajpai, third youngest Indian to climb Mount Everest at a very early age of 16 years was born at Noida in the district. He broke the record set by Krushnaa Patil of Maharashtra who climbed the summit at the age of 19 years.

Geographically, the district lies at 28°36'N latitude, 77°55'E longitude and 195 m altitude. In the year 2021, there was a total 1.56% forest area of total geographical area. The district encompasses a geographical area of 1,282 sq. km. and in terms of geographical it occupies the ranks of 69th in state and 563rd in India. It is bounded by Ghaziabad district and Meerut district on the north, Aligarh district on the south, Bulandshahr district on the east and Haryana state on the west. The prominent river that flows through the district is Yamuna. The climate of the district remains extremely hot during the summer and fairly cold during the winter. Most of its rainfall occurs in the monsoon season. The actual rainfall in the district was 339 mm in the year of 2021-22.

Administration wise, the district is divided into 3 tehsils namely Sadar, Daadri and Jewar. There are 1 Lok Sabha seat and 3 Assembly constituencies in the district. Moreover, the district comprises 13 towns and 320 villages. The administrative language in the district is Hindi.

According to 2011 census the district has a population of 16,48,115 including 8,90,214 are males and 7,57,901 are females. The district has a sex ratio of 851 females for every 1000 males. During the year 2001-2011 the population growth rate in the district was 37.11% out of which 36.36% were males and 38.00% were females. The population density in the district is 1,286 persons per sq. km. In the year 2020 the number of live births in the district was 63,470 including 33,894 were males and 29,576 were females. In the same year the number of deaths in the district was 13,789 out of which 9,003 were males and 4,786 were females. As per 2011 census the major religion in the district is Hindu with 84.58% of the total population. According to 2011 census the principal language in the district is Hindi with 94.68%.

Agriculture is the backbone of the economy of the district. Most of the lands in the district are uses for the agricultural purpose. Some of its chief agricultural products are wheat, sugarcane, bajra, sorghum, paddy, oilseeds, pulses, maize, barley, potato, mango, guava, papaya, aonla, onion, chilli, etc. Every year a huge chunk of revenue comes from these agricultural products helps in its economy to a great extent. The district is also developed industrially. Noida and Greater Noida are the industrial hubs of the district. Majority of the population of these areas earn their livelihood from these industries. The foremost industries in the district are Honda Siel Cars India, Daewoo Motors, Yamaha Motors, Wipro, Asian Paints, Videocon, Minda Corporation Limited, LG Electronics Pvt. Ltd., Delphi Automotive, NTPC Dadri, Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd. R and D Centre, etc. In the year 2020-21 the gross domestic product in the district was Rs. 1,35,32,081 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 90,73,949 lakh at Constant Prices during the year 2011-2012. The Net Domestic Product in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 1,16,83,128 lakh at Current Price and Rs. 76,54,276 lakh at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012. The Per Capita Income or NDDP, At Factor Cost in the district during the period 2020-21 was Rs. 5,41,709 at Current Price and Rs. 3,54,904 at Constant Prices in the year 2011-2012.

The district provides a platform for higher education. Some of its reputed educational institutions are M.B. Degree College, Mayawati Government Degree College, Amity School of Computer Sciences, Ram Eesh Institute of Vocational and Technical Education, Gautam Buddha University, Sharda University, Shiv Nadar University, Galgotias University and Noida International University. As per 2011 census the literacy rate in the district is 80.12% including 88.06% are males and 70.82% are females. The total number of literates in the district is 11,22,947 including 6,66,065 are males and 4,56,882 are females.

Anil Kumar Awana, an illustrious Indian politician and a member of the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council representing the Bulandshahar Local Authorities constituency was born on 15th August, 1968 at Harola village in the Gautam Buddha Nagar district. He is a member of the Bahujan Samaj Party.

During the year 2021, there were 6,78,040 domestic tourists and 567 foreign tourists who visited these places of the district. The district has numerous historical monuments and recreational parks which allures many travellers from different parts of the country as well as world. The notable tourist places in the district are Bairaj, Baba Ahmad Shah Mazar, Obra Railway Dam, Raj Mahal (Qilla), Chhota Mahal, Great India Place, Iskcon temple, Worlds Of Wonder, Adventure Hangout, etc.
